The second seminar in the 2007-2008 'Regards croisés', Concepts and Practices in Contemporary French Philosophy series took place Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 at The American University of Paris.
Elie During and Laurent Jeanpierre led the seminar with two presentations entitled "Postpolis: A Local Approach to Global Cities" based on their recent project for the "Airs de Paris" exhibition at the George Pompidou Center in Paris. “Airs de Paris”, a thematic exhibition that opened in April 2007 at the Pompidou Center, combined visual arts, design and architecture relating to changes in the city and contemporary urban life. The curators of the exhibition commissioned Elie During and Laurent Jeanpierre to develop an intellectual structure for the exhibition and to lead a multidisciplinary, cutting-edge reflection on the transformations of the contemporary cityscape. They set up an innovative discussion forum on the internet, the first of its kind for the Pompidou Center. Two of the fundamental questions that guided their research were: What are the most significant contemporary urban and architectural transformations? What are the analytical tools, concepts, works or techniques that best take into account this moment?
The 'Regards croisés' seminar series in 'Concepts and Practices in Contemporary French Philosophy' presents different French and Anglo-saxon perspectives on twentieth and twenty-first century French philosophy around the concepts of 'Local, Vital, Legal'. Papers are presented by specialists in contemporary French philosophy as well as by those who are engaged in examining the impact of French philosophy within other domains and disciplines: literature, law, politics, art, and the sciences. The joint seminar in 'Concepts and Practices in Contemporary French Philosophy' is organized by the Critical Theory Collective at The American University of Paris in partnership with the Centre International d'Étude de la Philosophie Française Contemporaine (CIEPFC) at the École normale supérieure and Columbia University Paris - Reid Hall.
